Rebecca Brushett

Atlantic Healthy Oceans Initiative (AHOI)

Rebecca holds a Masters of Arts in Environmental Policy and a Bachelor of Education from Memorial University of Newfoundland. She also has a B.Sc. in marine biology from Dalhousie University. Rebecca began her work in coastal communities and on the ocean over 15 years ago. During her university years she conducted field research on grey whales, zooplankton and redfish off Flores Island, BC, and in Bonne Bay, NL. Soon after this she took to teaching grades 7-12 sciences in many rural communIties of western, NL. Once her environmental policy graduate degree was complete she moved into the environmental advocacy world to help protect our ocean. She’s worked with the Ecology Action Centre (EAC) for 5 years on Sustainable Fisheries, Plastic Pollution and now, on Marine Spatial Planning and Protection. In 2019 she created the non-profit, Atlantic Healthy Oceans Initiative (AHOI) to increase her efforts with Fish Harvesters, Indigenous First Nations, eNGOs, academic experts and interested community members in western, NL to better understand the health of our ocean and to create solutions to improve its health for generations to come.
